Overview

This is the most enticingly coloured version of the Lavazza A Modo Mio Extra series. The silver and red combination makes it a great fit for any modern kitchen, but what kind of coffee does the Lavazza A Modo Mio Extra Red produce?

What we like best

The design of the A Modo Mio series is very well-thought out: round edges, funky colours, the stainless steel finishes on the handles and dispensers, and the subtle but distinctive Lavazza and Saeco logos. Saeco have been manufacturing coffee machines for 30 years now, and the Lavazza A Modo Mio series is a work of great elegance as well as functionality.

There is a conveniently positioned and minimalistic steam arm for Lattes and Cappuccinos. The crema and froth it produces is satisfyingly thick and lingering, going very well with the tar-coloured java the coffee machine dispenses.

Used capsules are stored in a tray that holds up to 10 capsules, and the A Modo Mio Extra Red comes with a beginner’s pack containing some sample capsules.

What we like least

The fact that this coffee machine runs only on Lavazza’s own coffee capsules is both a blessing and a bit of a drawback – the coffee tastes amazing, but it is definitely on the expensive side, especially for pre-packed coffee capsules. Then again, if you go for a Lavazza coffee machine you’re probably the kind of person who values his coffee enough to cough up the extra dollar for the capsules.

Despite the machine’s size, the water tank (9l) isn’t very big – you might have to refill it whilst making coffee for more people than yourself.

The verdict

The Lavazza A Modo Mio Extra Red has it all: great design (there are other colours available for those who find the red a bit too “loud”), ease of use and great-tasting, high-quality coffee. Thoroughly recommended for every coffee lover.

User Reviews

"I love this machine - it's quick, easy to use and the coffee is perfect - every time I have had several traditional machines & burr grinders The results varied so much I used to dread using them Lavazza and Illy are my fave italian coffee brands I looked up the Illy iper system (francis francis!) and it looks v good too but the pods are dearer, have more components for landfill, and aren't widely available in stores Also I boycott the'n' brand as many people do Tesco and Waitrose sell the A Modo Mio pods Waitrose currently has 2 boxes of 16 for £6 That seems dear compared to beans but is only 24p a cup maximum, and there's no waste from making poorly tamped / pulled coffees, coffee that has been open for over 2 weeks etc I read up so much about pulling the perfect shot with my other machine My best was not as good as the coffee this machine makes every time The frothing wand is a little on the short side, but a shallow jug should be fine Clean up takes 30 seconds. Comes with 24 pods plus £20 cashback, pod, cups, accessories offer."
