Overview

The Krups Nescafe KP300240 is an espresso machine with an unorthodox design that uses the Dolce Gusto pods system. Does it provide good value for money?

The KP300240’s design might appear a bit odd at first, but it’s actually a clever way of keeping it slim and compact and making it fit into even cramped kitchen areas. The winner of the Reddot Design Award 2011 comes in simple white and in a curved, tap-like form that is a far cry from a lot of the other cubic, more conventional coffee machines.

It has a transparent water tank so you’ll be able to see for yourself if water is running low, and the Dolce Gusto pods offer a large variety of flavours. The KP300240 specialises in espresso-based drinks but can also prepare hot chocolate and decaf drinks.

The coffee is satisfyingly strong and hot, with the latte being especially tasty, but the fact remains that the pods (which you can buy both in supermarkets and online) are significantly more expensive than ground or instant coffee.

The transparent water tank doesn’t prevent you from having to pretty much guess how much water to use per cup of coffee, at least until you’ve figured it out and can remember it.

The verdict

Priced at around £100, the Krups KP300240 Dolce Gusto is a very good option for smaller households that don’t want to put up with instant coffee or rely on Starbucks. Its design is a bit leftfield, but not outlandishly so – you can still see that it’s a coffee machine and not, say, a cheese grater from outer space. It is easy to use and yet produces coffee well above the standard of most coffee chains.
