"There’s an excessive amount of leaking, and its buttons don’t feel as firm as we would like them to be"
Matthias Scherer
Krups have made a competitively priced, compact, entry type espresso machine with the K2 XP402040 – but does it stand up against the standards set by more expensive espresso makers?
The K2 XP402040’s design is reassuringly retro and makes good use of the contrast between black plastic and stainless steel parts. This machine runs on the common and affordable E.S.E. pods, as well as ground coffee – and it comes with a cup warming plate.
This coffee machine’s main advantage has got to be its quick espresso pulling power – starting it up, to taking your first sip will rarely take more than one and a half minutes. The coffee temperature is reliably hot and it will give you a decent crema, but there’s an excessive amount of leaking, and its buttons don’t feel as firm as we would like them to be.
The milk frother is easy to clean, but that is as much praise as we’re willing to give – we found this machine’s froth far too thin and tepid, and the whole set-up seems to be lacking in power.
If you’ve never owned a coffee machine before, you’ll want to get something that doesn’t cost the world and that’s easy to use. Krups’ K2 XP402040 fulfils both of these requirements, but glaring deficiencies (cheap-feeling build, bad milk frother) make it hard to recommend this coffee machine without qualification. It does make a good coffee, but if you’re looking for a long-term investment for your kitchen, look elsewhere.
