"Coffee machines tend to be either soberly stylish or slightly kooky, and the Platinum Event definitely leans towards the former category"
The Gaggia Platinum Event is part of Gaggia’s mid-range automatic coffee maker line. Mid-range here refers mainly to the price, because the Platinum Event comes with most of the features and all the reliability of a luxury product.
The first thing you notice looking at the black version of the Gaggia 74849 Platinum Event is the very dark exterior, which stands out among most of the silver-coloured coffee makers on the market. Coffee machines tend to be either soberly stylish or slightly kooky, and the Platinum Event definitely leans towards the former category – its cool, smooth design is more intriguing than, say, the fully automated interface of the Gaggia Accademia Espresso Maker RI9702/04.
The Platinum Event is powered by 1500W and comes with a sizeable 1.7L water tank, which is easily removable via the back. There is a ceramic bean grinder, and you can use your favourite brand of ground coffee as well as the milk steamer to garnish your espresso drinks and heat up water for a cup of tea too.
It is the same size as the more expensive Gaggia Swing Up, to which it looks remarkably similar.
The Gaggia 74849 Platinum Event is a very good coffee machine, but there are no standout mechanisms or features. The black model at least looks slightly leftfield, but otherwise it is difficult to find major deviations from the tried and trusted Gaggia automatic coffee maker range. Having said that, that’s a very minor quibble, as Gaggia have got the combination of top technology and smart design down pat.
