Overview

Calling all those who like their java frothy and with a Nespresso seal of quality: you might like this coffee machine.

Part of DeLonghi’s Nespresso Lattissima range, the EN680 is an appliance comparatively low on visual flair but high on functionality and reliability. Its compact shape is ideal for smaller kitchens, and its versatility makes it a great option for households or small offices where people have different preferences.

Having said that, the water tank only holds 1.2L of liquid, so if you intend to use the EN680 in a communal environment, be aware that you will have to refill it more often than with other, bigger coffee machines.

This machine’s milk container is on the left hand side, with a coffee dispenser in the middle and controls on the right. The milk jug can be removed easily and stored in the fridge.

Users might want to pre-heat their mugs where possible, because a lot of the time the water does come out at a less than ideal temperature – when boiled appropriately, the coffee is delicious, but there are few things more infuriating than a lukewarm cup of coffee.

The strong suit of the DeLonghi EN680 is its expertise when it comes to milk-based espresso drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos. It produces froth which is reliably thick and rich, and goes well with the high-end (and thus pricey) Nespresso capsules.

The verdict

The DeLonghi EN680 Nespresso is a solid mid-range coffee machine, but its inconsistency with water temperature sets it back substantially. If the temperature is below par, it doesn’t matter that the froth is creamy and tasty or that the brewing time is quick – you won’t be able to enjoy your coffee. Having said that, the machine is reasonably priced and if you pre-heat your coffee mugs you can go some way to alleviating this considerable flaw.
